Auditors are Friends, Not Food

If you've spent any amount of time in banking, you've probably heard a version of the same sentiment:
"Uh oh, the auditors are coming."
For many banking employees, the word audit can create feelings of anxiety, stress, and even dread. Auditors are often viewed as the people who show up, point out everything that's wrong, and leave behind a list of findings.
At The Bankers Solutions, we'd like to challenge that perception.
In fact, our team has an ongoing joke: "Auditors are friends, not food."
If you're a Finding Nemo fan, you'll recognize the reference to the sharks' famous motto: "Fish are friends, not food." This phrase has become a lighthearted reminder of how we approach our relationships with clients. We aren't here to attack, criticize, or catch anyone doing something wrong. We're here to help.
The Auditor Misconception
Somewhere along the way, auditors developed a reputation as the "bad guys."
Maybe it's because receiving a finding can be uncomfortable, or because nobody enjoys having their work scrutinized.
The reality, however, is that a good auditor isn't looking for ways to create problems; a good auditor is looking for ways to help prevent them.
We Work Alongside You
One of our core philosophies at The Bankers Solutions is collaboration.
We understand that our clients are balancing countless priorities every day. Regulatory requirements continue to evolve. Staffing challenges exist. Time is limited. Resources aren't always abundant.
That's why we approach every audit with a mindset of collaboration.
We want our clients to feel comfortable asking questions; understanding why we are testing something; seeing findings as opportunities rather than failures; and knowing we're on the same team.
Our success is tied to your success.
The Best Audits Are Conversations
The most effective audits don't feel like interrogations. They feel like conversations.
They involve open dialogue, shared learning, and a mutual goal of doing things better tomorrow than they were done yesterday.
Some of the best moments during an audit occur when a client says:
"I never thought about it that way."
"Can you help us understand this requirement?"
Those conversations create value that extends far beyond completing an audit report.
Findings Are Not Failures
Another misconception is that a finding means someone failed. Findings often occur because regulations change, processes evolve, or risks emerge that weren't previously considered.
Even the strongest institutions receive recommendations and findings. What matters is how the organization responds.
We encourage our clients to view findings as a roadmap rather than a report card. Every recommendation is an opportunity to strengthen controls, improve processes, and reduce future risk.
Shared Goals
At the end of the day, auditors and bankers want many of the same things:
Strong internal controls
Effective risk management
Regulatory compliance
Operational efficiency
Positive experiences and outcomes
Those goals aren't competing interests, they're shared objectives.
That's why we believe the relationship between auditor and client should be built on trust, communication, and collaboration.
Friends, Not Food
So, the next time an audit is scheduled, remember our team's favorite saying: Auditors are friends, not food.
We're not showing up to criticize — we're showing up to partner with you, share knowledge, identify opportunities, and help your institution succeed.
At The Bankers Solutions, we don't view ourselves as outsiders looking in it. We view ourselves as part of your team.
And that's exactly how we believe auditing should be.
